A disability support worker’s main purpose is to help people with mental or physical disabilities achieve independence. As a qualified disability support worker, you help to motivate and empower your clients to improve their quality of life. When we say “quality life”, we mean the ability for people to enjoy their lives and be involved in the community. This is especially important for people who are experiencing long-term mental or physical disability. This type of support is not only for those who have these issues.
You may need a CDEL (certification to direct disability support services certification) and DSBS (disability service services certification) as an employee at an IATA disability support firm. These certifications, in addition to the requirements listed above, require that you take a field training class. This training will provide you with specific information about the laws applicable to your profession. You must ensure that you have the correct Canada Revenue Agency documentation in Canada. It’s also important to be familiar with all details pertaining to your profession, as well as the Canadian regulations that govern it.

You may need to work closely with your campus depending on your specialty. For example, if you’re working with people who have cognitive or emotional disabilities, your campus needs to have appropriate documentation about your status as a disabled person. This documentation can be prepared by your disability support agency. Your disability support organization can also assist you in finding appropriate accommodations on your campus.
If you’re working in an area of specialty, you may need specific training to perform your duties. Training and documentation are not only required in the workplace. Most campuses have employment lawyers who specialize in these issues and provide the expertise needed to navigate the workplace when you’re a disability support worker.
It’s important to remember that disability services do not provide automatic accommodations. Academic accommodations require that your academic institution first determine what accommodations are available. Your disability support provider should be able help you determine what is available at your school. Most schools won’t grant accommodations requests based on disability, unless your doctor has written it.
